Finding forever homes for as many orphaned pets as we possibly can is absolutely our goal. We celebrate adoptions and invite adopters from all over to find their match here at the R-H SPCA.
All cats and dogs are required to be spayed or neutered per Virginia state law, which helps prevent more puppies and kittens from needing a new home! |
Our volunteers donate their time to keep pets in our care happy, socialized, exercised, and loved. This enrichment makes an enormous difference in the quality of life for our pets while they await meeting their perfect families. Learning social skills, basic obedience, and refining manners helps these pets prepare for a new lease on life in their forever homes.
Volunteering isn't limited to working with animals onsite. We need help with adoption events, fundraisers, and outreach programs as well! |
We utilize our foster program for pets with special needs such as mothers with litters, pets recovering from illness and/or trauma, young babies who need to grow up a bit before being ready for adoption, animals not adjusting well to the shelter, and many more situations. These special needs pets require the attention and TLC of a one-on-one foster parent.

Reuniting pets with their families is a major part of helping our community. Families missing their friend, or good Samaritans who've found a pet, should make a report so we can be on the look out for potential matches.
We encourage owners to come in and look at new arrivals with their own eyes since no one will know their pet like they do. Finders are encouraged to bring the pet they found by so we can scan for a microchip and take a photo in case an owner comes forward. |
We are proud to work with 70 (and counting) limited admission and breed-specific rescue groups! Our rescue group allies help us address pets with special health and behavioral needs, find fosters, and take pets to areas with a higher adoption demand.
We make sure that our rescue group partners are in compliance with all state and federal regulations as well as share our standards of care for animal welfare and public health and safety. |
