Home for the Holidays Successful!

11/30/2016

Picture
Thirty-seven shelter pets found forever homes during our Home for the Holidays event! We hold this special event each year to help our orphaned animals find homes in time for the holidays. We want to thank all the adopters who opened their hearts and homes to these orphaned animals. Thanks also to our awesome volunteers Carol and Boel for their help during the annual event.

Our supportive veterinary community offered free spays and neuters for shelter pets during Home for the Holidays, which helped to make the animals more adoptable. We are so grateful to the following veterinary practices for their support and generosity:

•           Ashby Animal Clinic
•           Broadway  Veterinary Hospital
•           Dayton Animal Clinic
•           Green Meadows Veterinary Services
•           Harrisonburg Animal Hospital
•           Heartland Veterinary Clinic
•           Maple Lane Veterinary Clinic
•           Massanutten Animal Clinic
•           New Market Veterinary Clinic
•           North Fork Veterinary Hospital
•           Valley Veterinary Hospital

Of course, no one would have known about the event without the help of the local media. Thanks to WHSV-TV, Mix 93.1, 98.5 Rock, 104.3 KCY Country, Daily News Record, Kline May Realty, Harrisonburg Towing and Storage, and Permatreat Pest and Termite Control for their help in promoting and publicizing our Home for the Holidays event. We appreciate your continued support!

If you have room in your heart and home, there is still time to offer a pet a forever home before the end of the holiday season!

Chelsea's a Perfect Fit

11/7/2016

Picture
Well its been a couple weeks since we brought Chelsea home. She has adjusted well! She sleeps in our sons room at night and patiently waits on us to bring her bed in his room every night and then to the living room every morning! If we take to long, we get the look! She gets along great with our male lab Ace. They play together constantly! She has made him more active! She has also picked up on some of his "bad" habits such as demanding her breakfast and dinner on time! She is doing well with having free roam of our land. We had her to the vet to have her stitches removed and had heartworm testing and everything done and she is good to go! She is down to 69 lbs and the vet said maybe another 5-9 lbs and he would be comfortable with that. We couldn't be happier having her in our home. She fit right in immediately!

Rain had a great first night at home.

Lucie Belle (the boss) in the background accepted Rain at first sniff and Val already loved her from Saturday. Rain met the goats and chickens and turkeys this morning and gave them only a passing sniff. The only problem I foresee is keeping her still until her spay incision heals. She didn't want to go in the crate last night but as soon as she went in (with a treat) she laid down and slept through the night. All three dogs lined up and ate breakfast together this morning with no trouble at all, it seems like she has always been here!

Thank you for the work you do finding homes for wonderful animals like Rain!!!

Our son made this fort with Bunzy. He enjoys him greatly. Every evening he has looked forward to playing with him.
Thanks you and your staff for the wonderful experience.

Happily Ollie After!

Hi everyone at RHSPCA!
I wanted to share our adoption story. In August 2013 my husband and I started looking for a dog. We knew we wanted a young larger dog, and were contacting breeders and looking at shelters. On the first Saturday our search, we saw our perfect match in your puppy room. At the time, his name was Konnor, he was described as a Chow/Collie mix, and he looked like this (floppy ears!). We applied for him, were approved by Monday, and he came home Tuesday. He was a teeny tiny 13 lbs at 16 weeks old. We renamed him Oliver, or Ollie for short. At the urging or our vet, we did a DNA test on him through Wisdom Panel to see how big he would get, and found out he was a Korean Jindo, Collie, and Bouvier des Flandres mix and would grow to be between 60 and 75 lbs. His two litter mates at the shelter definitely resembled the Bouvier side of the family, but he took after the Jindo side.

Ollie was almost paralyzingly scared of new things when we first got him, like new people, being outside, porches, stairs, walking over bridges, water, getting in cars, diesel engines, etc., and we spent a lot of time patiently exposing him slowly and carefully to many new and fun positive things, like treats, and toys, and the park! He took some special care and loving to let him come out of his shell, but he really is flourishing now at a little over a year and a half old.
Ollie has grown up with a kitty sister who is 10 months older than him, and they are best friends. Being raised with a smaller animal has helped to curb his small prey drive somewhat, and thanks to being socialized extensively as a puppy, he is always friendly and playful with other dogs, though gentle with old and small dogs, and other cats. Squirrels are a different story though. :) We went through puppy obedience and intermediate training classes with Ollie at Petsmart, and he has shown off his incredible intelligence and willingness to learn tricks, especially through treat motivation! :)

Ollie is fully grown now, at a trim and healthy 63 lbs. While in Virginia, we did a lot of hiking in the Shenandoah National Park and running at Purcell and Highland Parks. We moved to Chicago in September this year, and he has definitely adjusted well to city life. He loves all the dog parks, and meeting new doggie friends on the street, and playing fetch in the small waves on the shore at Lake Michigan. Especially nice is that everything is within walking distance now, as he has gotten very car sick every time he is in a car. Even the cold weather agrees with him. His thick double coat of fur keeps him warm, and playing in the fallen leaves and snow are his favorite things (other than getting treats and shredding stuffed toys haha).

We love our dog so much, and are so happy and grateful for the wonderful care he got at RHSPCA for the 3 weeks he was there before we adopted him. We are delighted to now be advocates for shelter adoption!

We couldn't be happier, thank you so much for helping us add another member to the family! Her personality is simply amazing, I couldn't imagine a better fit! Instant love!

I have a feeling we will be back sometime this summer looking for a playmate!

To the wonderful people at the RHSPCA:

Poppy has been renamed to Emma. She responds well to it and loves her family!! Emma has adapted well and loves her brother Mosby. She thinks the pug, Maggie, is a puppy and tries to give her baths and bring her food which is absolutely adorable. She loves being with people and never leaves my side. I am so glad to have her in my life. I have attached some pictures for you! She has gained a bit of weight too.

Love,
Ashleigh and Emma!!

One Happy Little Dog!

11/1/2016

This is Chloe, casually known as Little Dog. We adopted her December of last year, and since then she has become a spoiled little lap dog. She loves to hunt, specifically squirrels but she's flexible. She's gained 15 pounds since we adopted her and it's mostly muscle. She loves running around with Abbie, our other dog. And here is a picture of her at her most photogenic!

Dear RHSPCA:
Not sure if you all remember Tucker but wanted to send a few pictures and let you all know that he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. He truly rescued me. RHSPCA will always have a special place in my heart. Tuck is still as goofy as ever and I love every minute of it. He's skittish around strangers but has improved sooo much. Thank you guys for what you do and thank you for such a wonderful dog :)
