Throwback Thursday: Katie Nana

9/6/2018

Picture
Hi All,
As I'm sitting here on my couch this Friday night, I can't help but want to show you all what a blessing my Katie Nana has been! Since we brought her home in May, she has come out her shell so much. She still doesn't like toys, but she'll do anything for a chicken wrapped raw hide. She whines and moo's like a cow when she's excited and she loves to lay on the couch and our bed when we're not at home. She has the spare bedroom all to herself where she can lay on the bed and bark at other dogs out the window! She rarely barks but when she does, it's because she's excited. She loves long walks and she even wakes her mom up at 6:00AM every morning for her walk. She only listens to her dad but she does love both of us so much. If you're near her while she's laying down, she will find your hand with her nose just for a rub and she also loves to put her face right up against your cheek and just lay there. She loves being close to her mom and dad.

The vet says she's anywhere from 5-7 but this Ol lady still goes into a full sprint when she sees a cat in the neighborhood. She also loves to chase bunnies. She has gained a healthy 10lbs since coming to her forever home and
her thick fur coat is growing in for the winter after we have her a short cut this summer.

Thank you again for all you did for our girl and every day we look at each other and can't believe our love for our sweet Katie Nana. And thank you for what you continue to do for all the other animals at the shelter. Adopting Katie Nan was the best decision we've ever made. She continues to bring us so much joy and if we come up to Harrisonburg with her, we will absolutely come visit!! I hope all the pictures send as well!

Happy Fall!
Melissa and Zachary

Throwback Thursday

5/10/2018

Some of our "archives" (read: binder of photos) have been around for quite some time. Sharing multiple stories multiple times can sometimes lead to letters getting separated from the photos included. This is one such situation where we have photos but no letter or note with them anymore. This kitty's relaxed pose was too good not to share!

Throwback Thursday: Herbert

5/3/2018

A brief message transcribed next, followed by a face shot of a black lab with a gray muzzle. In the bottom corner, someone wrote
Update from Herbert's foster family - 4/10/2014

Herbert has been an absolute pleasure to have around. All he wants is somebody to love. He follows his foster everywhere he goes or lies at his feet and naps. He's a lovely walker on the leash and just wants to mosey along with his favorite human. He loves being outside and soaking up the sun. He's such an easy guy with a heart of gold that he reminds his foster of Neil Young's song 'Heart of Gold.' All Herbert wants now is his forever family!
When we send a pet to a rescue group, we love to hear about their progress. Though we don't have a message assuring us of Herbert's adoption, he is clearly in good hands who have his best interests at heart. Part of why we thoroughly vet our rescue partners is to ensure that pets are going to a place that can provide improvement to their situation either through a one-on-one foster home, medical care, advanced training, or simply a sister rescue who has the resources to address one more orphan in need. Throwback Thursday: Winny

4/19/2018

We adopted Winny at the home and garden show at the fair grounds. We changed her name to Winny because she loved to sit in windows. The pictures are of her in our NOVA condo window, sleeping on a fuzzy blanket, and playing with one of her fuzz balls on her puppy brother Tripper's bed. Sherry and Jeff, McGaheysville, VA

Throwback Thursday: Dewey, now Dobbin

4/19/2018

Picture
Hello everyone,
I adopted Dobbin (formerly Dewey) 3 weeks ago. I cannot begin to tell you what a joy this happy boy has been. He fit right in with his "brother" and "sister" from the moment I put him down with them. He smiles constantly, plays so joyfully with his balls and stuffed animals, snuggles closely, and is so very smart. He sleeps curled against me nightly...and never fails to give goodnight kisses to us all.

He has become a celebrity with his antics whenever others are around. Everyone who meets him tells him what a cute little guy he is.

I want to thank you folks for making the adoption possible and bringing much happiness to me and my little canine family.

It's really hard to get a photo of him being still unless he is sleeping so I've just included some when he is taking a break. -Anita

Throwback Thursday: Betty & Wilma

4/12/2018

Hello! Betty & Wilma just wanted to say hello to everyone at RHSPCA! They are doing great and getting bigger every day. They love to be together, play in their boxes, lounge on their cat tree, and look out onto the back porch. Oh and they love to nap all day by the window :) I attached a few recent pictures. Thanks again helping Betty & Wilma find their forever home with us. We love them very much. Kristen

Throwback Thursday: Lilly Bug, Now Deena

4/5/2018

Hi! I adopted Lilly Bug in early January and I wanted to update you on how she's doing. I've renamed her to Deena and she's doing just fine! She follows me around and is curious about everything. She's playful and active, but she also loves catnaps in the sun. The vet said she's healthy and everything looks good! I've attached a photo of her. We're a happy pair! Have a great day, Isabel
Thank you so much for the update on Deena! She looks so comfortable and at home. Thank you so much for adopting!

Throwback Thursday: Marley

4/5/2018

January 29, 2016. I just wanted to drop you a note after 1 year of adopting Marley to let you know how much I enjoy having her in my home. The moment I saw her eyes on the computer I knew I had to adopt her. She has been a wonderful companion to me and I'm sure that she loves her home with me. We have a very nice fenced in back yard and she can run around all she wants and play with the dog next door who is also an adopted dog. I tell everyone what a great experience adopting her has been and hopefully others will rescue a dog for their home. Sincerely, Donna.

Throwback Thursday: Daisy

A hand-written letter the contents of which are in the text to the right.
June 11, 2015

Greetings local SPCA,
Nearly 12 and half years ago, myself and my son Luke came into the local SPCA looking to take home a dog. We looked and picked a black mixed breed puppy that we named Daisy. Little did we know that she would change our lives forever. She has been such a blessing to our whole family. She is our watch dog, our friend, our walking companion and our constant lap dog during the evening TV watching times. I cannot imagine our home without her. She has been healthy and happy ever since. My son was just finishing the 5th grade at her adoption time and is now 22 years old soon to be 23.

Thank you for giving us the best gift of this wonderful dog. With all our love,
-Allen & Sheila & Luke
Luke & Daisy the 1st day home: a 5th grade boy with short hair sits next to a black puppy whose ears stick up and bend at the tips. Luke & Daisy today: a young man with longish hair and a beard crouches beside a black dog whose face has turned gray. Everyone looks very happy and content.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story with us. Daisy looks so loved and happy, and we love seeing how your family has changed over the years! Thank you for adopting her and giving her a wonderful home!

Throwback Thursday: Boots & Pants, now Pip & Toothless

3/28/2018

Picture
Hello SPCA!!
My name is Naomi, my mom's name is Michelle, and we are the family that adopted Boots (now named Pip) and Pants (now named Toothless). I know we were supposed to keep you updated with pictures of them, but everything just got so busy, with taking care of them and working. But here we are now!! You will find enclosed, pictures of the kittens form their first day home (4/22/2015) to the present.

At first they were very shy. So shy in face, that they hid under the smallest space they could find and refused to come out. Not even for food! Little Pip was skittish, very cautious, and would hiss a little if we got too close to him. Little Toothless was a little shy too, but much more adventurous and eager to play.
Picture
After a few days of exploring and getting more familiar with the new environment (via Naomi's bedroom), they were a little more confident. They would jump up on the bed, play, and meow when we left them for too long. When they finally ate, Naomi was very relieved and she was also relieved when they went in the litter box. Toothless had a little trouble the first few times, she went outside the box, but she eventually did go in the litter box. To which Naomi cheered a lot.

They had a good first week in the bedroom and then Naomi couldn't get enough sleep with 2 little kittens running around and causing trouble. So they were moved to the family room, where they had plenty of toys and room to run around and not disturb anyone. We've slowly been introducing them to different rooms of the house, all the while keeping a close eye on them. So far they have access to the family room and and the sun room. We hope that soon, they will have free range of the house!

They got all their vaccinations and shots and are going to be spayed and neutered next week (7/20). Both are strictly indoor cats, the only time they are ever outside is when they are taken to the vet in their pet carriers. You may also notice that their claws are colored, no it's not nail polish (everyone thinks that, haha!), they are softpaws, little non-toxic vinyl caps with a smooth end that simply glue onto the cat's claws. The caps and dry glue are non-toxic, so if the cat swallows them, the cap will just pass harmlessly through their digestive system. They are a great alternative to declawing and the cats look fashionable and adorable.
Picture
In the last month or so, we've seen the biggest change in Pip, who would always run away when someone approached him or tried to pet him. Now he is the biggest snuggle bug. He loves to be picked up and will sit in your lap while you watch TV. Toothless is snuggly too, but it's only with her mama (Naomi). Both cats love to give kitty hugs (rub all over our legs) and they both chirp and meow when they want attention. We can hardly believe it's already been 3 months since we adopted them. Pip and Toothless have grown so much and we can't believe that they were ever so tiny! We are so happy that we found them and we're so happy they're a part of our family now! Both seem very happy with us, but we wish they would stop growing up so fast!

Thank you so much! We'll try to keep you updated better, with more pictures!
-Naomi and Michelle
Thank you so much for such a lovely update on our shy babies! They were so timid here, with all the changes in their lives before arriving at the RHSPCA. Your patience and compassion have clearly paid off! Thank you for giving these kitties such a loving home and giving them the time to blossom!

Throwback Thursday: Dakota

3/22/2018

Picture of a black and white dog with droopy, pointed ears. He is wearing a blue harness and very thick, fluffy fur.
Dear Staff at Rockingham / Harrisonburg SPCA,
We thought you'd like to know what became of one of your dogs. Our daughter, Amy, adopted Dakota (who you knew as Sheba) in August of 2004. Dakota spent time at JMU and then ended up at our house in Burke, VA. She had a great life. She enjoyed hikes at Burke Lake Park and the Shenandoah Mountains. She went on many fishing trips with my husband and enjoying beach time up at Cape Cod, MA. She was a dog full of exuberance and happiness. She loved chasing balls, playing with toys, running, and going for walks. She was very gentle with people and everyone loved her.

We had to say goodbye to her on May 1st. As much as we miss her, we have years of wonderful memories of a life well-lived. We would like to make a donation in memory of Dakota. We are forever grateful for knowing her and having her in our lives.

Thank you so much for memorializing Dakota in such a meaningful way. Your memorial donation helps animals awaiting adoption by providing food, medical care, and comfort. Thank you again!
